Leilani Gilpin is a PhD student on the Toyota Research Initiative Project: "The Car Can Explain!" in CSAIL at MIT, working under the supervision of Professor Gerald Jay Sussman. Before returning to academia, she worked as a research engineer at Palo Alto Research Center (PARC).  Leilani received her M.S. in Computational Mathematical and Engineering from Stanford University in 2013, and her B.S. in Mathematics (with honors), B.S. in Computer Science (with highest honors), and a music minor from UC San Diego in 2011.  Her current research focuses on artificial intelligence, especially qualitative reasoning and self-explaining systems.  Her current project explores the underlying technology and strategies for autonomous vehicles (and other autonomous machines) to explain themselves.
